The Sensex closed higher by 237 points, ending a six-day losing skid; broader indices fall. On Monday, the major market indices finished with solid gains, snapping a six-day losing run. The indices were supported by FMCG, financial services, and IT stocks, while metal, oil & gas, and media stocks dragged the index down. The Nifty recovered from an intraday low of 15,191.10 in the morning trading to close above 15,300.

The S&P BSE Sensex, the barometer index, increased by 237.42 points, or 0.46%, to 51,597.84. To 15,350.15, the Nifty 50 index increased 56.65 points, or 0.37%. In the last six trading sessions, the major indices have lost more than 7% of their value. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 1.39%, while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index dropped 2.95%.
The Nifty 50 index was outperformed by the Nifty FMCG index (up 1.8%), the Nifty Financial Services index (up 0.96 %), and the Nifty IT index (up 0.87%). The Nifty Metal index, which fell 3.9%, the Nifty Oil & Gas index, which fell 3.26%, and the Nifty Media index, which fell 2.59%, all underperformed the Nifty 50 index.
Today, the Nifty Metal index fell 3.90% to 4540.55. Over the last month, the index has dropped 20.00%. Vedanta Ltd plummeted 12.69%, Hindustan Copper Ltd down 9.40 %, and Welspun Corp Ltd fell 8.68% among the members. The Nifty Metal index has dropped 10% in the last year, compared to a 2.12% drop in the benchmark Nifty 50 index. The Nifty PSE index is down 3.08% on the day, while the Nifty Media index is down 2.59%.
Buyers were outnumbered by sellers. On the BSE, 689 stocks rose while 2725 sank. There were 164 shares that remained unchanged. The rupee gained ground versus the dollar in the foreign currency market. The rupee was hanging around 77.985, down from 78.05 in the previous trading session. Gold futures on the MCX declined 0.06 % to Rs.50,806 for the 5 August 2022 settlement. Brent crude for the August 2022 settlement declined 2 cents, or 0.02 %, to $113.10 a barrel on the commodities market.
