On Tuesday, the major equity indices experienced significant declines and closed the day at their day lowest mark. The Nifty ended the day just over the 16,058 level. Investor sentiment was lowered by unfavourable global indicators. Investors exercised caution ahead of the release of the June retail inflation data later tomorrow. Among the sectoral indices on the NSE, metal, auto, and IT stocks lagged the most.

The barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, dropped 508.62 points or 0.94% to 53,886.61. The Nifty 50 index dropped 157.70 points (0.97%) to close at 16,058.30. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index lost 0.52%, while the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index fell 0.51% overall. The market overall was bearish. 1,477 shares increased and 1,818 shares decreased on the BSE and 172 shares in total remained unchanged.
The Nifty IT index had a 1.24% decrease to close at 27,040.85. In two trading sessions, the index decreased by 4.28%.
The following companies saw declines: Infosys (down 2.29%), Mphasis (down 1.69%), HCL Technologies (down 1.66%), Tech Mahindra (down 1.02%), L&T Technology Services (down 0.97%), Tata Consultancy Services (down 0.92%), and Wipro (down 0.49%). On the other hand, companies like Mindtree (up 1.3%), Larsen & Toubro Infotech (up 0.62%), and Coforge (up 0.46%) saw gains.
The US Dow Jones futures were currently trading with a cut of 226 points, indicating a negative start to equities on Wall Street today. Shares in Europe and Asia declined on Tuesday after Wall Street slipped on Monday. The prospect of further monetary policy tightening by major central banks, China's renewed COVID outbreak and Europe's energy shortage impacted sentiment. US equities fell Monday as Wall Street braced for big company earnings reports slated for later in the week which could signal how inflation is impacting businesses.
