Major Asian indices declined as investors tried to predict if a downturn in the economy would trigger monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve. Stock markets in China and Hong Kong both took a severe hit. The SGX Nifty indicated a negative start for India's broader index. As predicted, the Indian headline indices started lower but then fluctuated between little gains and losses.

At 12:20 pm, the BSE Sensex lost 0.12%, reaching a level of 58,965. The Nifty 50 index fell 0.09% to 17,561 level. On the Sensex, NTPC Ltd, IndusInd Bank and Power Grid Corporation of India were the top gainers, while Bharti Airtel, Titan and State Bank of India were the top losers.
Through the issuing of non-convertible debentures on a private placement basis, state-owned power major NTPC will raise Rs 2,000 crore. As the top gainer on the Sensex following this announcement, NTPC shares soared by more than 2.5%. The company also commissioned the first part of the 20 MW Gandhar Solar Project in Gujarat.
