History

The Adani Group's involvement in transmission began in 2006, long before Adani Transmission Limited (ATL) was formally established. The need to evacuate power from Adani's Mundra thermal power plant necessitated this. The dedicated power evacuation lines spanned over 3800 kilometres, connecting Mundra to Dehgam, Mundra to Mohindergarh, and Tirora to Warora.

Another line, spanning more than 1200 kilometres, was completed in 2014 to evacuate power from Adani's Tiroda power plant. As a result of the enormous business potential in the transmission sector, Adani Transmission Limited (ATL) was spun off from Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) in 2015 to pursue opportunities in the transmission sector. ATL has also pursued various inorganic growth opportunities, including the acquisition of GMR's transmission assets in Rajasthan (2016),

ATL entered the distribution space in 2018 when it acquired Reliance Infrastructure's Power Generation, Transmission, and Distribution Business in Mumbai. With a distribution network spanning over 400 square kilometres, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited (AEML) now serves over 3 million customers in Mumbai suburbs and Mira-Bhayender Municipal Corporation in Thane district.

ATL is now the largest private transmission company, with over 14,100 km of transmission lines and approximately 20,400 MVA of power transformation capacity. ATL has also set a lofty goal of constructing 20,000 circuit kilometres of transmission lines by 2022, leveraging both organic and inorganic growth opportunities.
