After going back and forth over the expiry of the Bank Nifty contracts, the NSE has finally decided to change the expiry date from Thursday to Wednesday. Here are the key highlights of the above announcement.

  • The weekly Bank Nifty option expiry date has been modified from Thursday to Wednesday. This only applies to the weekly contracts of Bank Nifty Options.

  • The shift in the expiry of Bank Nifty weekly contract expiries from Thursday to Wednesday will be effective from Monday September 04, 2023. Effective from that date, all the weekly contracts of Bank Nifty will shift from Thursday to Wednesday.

  • As a result, the first weekly expiry under the new format for the Bank Nifty options contract will be on Wednesday September 06, 2023. From that point onwards, all the contracts expiring on the weekly Thursday will get pushed back to Wednesday.

Change in expiry day does not apply to monthly contracts

An important point to note here is that this shift will not apply to the monthly contracts that currently expire on the last Thursday of each month. All the weekly contracts of Bank Nifty effective from September 04, 2023 will expire on Wednesday instead of on Thursday. This will apply to all weekly contracts in the weeks other than the monthly expiry week. For the weekly contracts, if Wednesday happens to be a trading holiday for the stock exchange, then the expiry will happen on Tuesday instead.

However, for the monthly expiry, there is not change. The monthly expiry of all Bank Nifty contracts will continue to happen on the last Thursday of the month as before. Also, there will be no change in the trading cycles. The Bank Nifty will continue to have 4 weekly expiration contracts (excluding the monthly contract), 3 monthly expiration contracts and 3 quarterly expiries. All such changes will be effective from the close of trading (EOD) on September 01, 2023.
