The Maharashtra government has declared a local holiday for Mumbai and its suburban districts on December 6, 2024, in honor of Mahaparinirvan Diwas. This day marks the 69th death anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a revered social reformer and the principal architect of the Indian Constitution. The announcement was made through a circular issued by the General Administration Department, confirming that all state and semi-government offices in these areas will remain closed.

Mahaparinirvan Diwas is an important occasion, drawing large crowds to Chaityabhoomi in Dadar, where Dr. Ambedkar was cremated. Located near Shivaji Park, Chaityabhoomi is expected to witness thousands of people gathering to pay their respects to Dr. Ambedkar. This local holiday marks the third of its kind in the year, following similar holidays for Dahi Handi and Ganesh Visarjan, showcasing the significance of cultural and historical events in the state.

The announcement has raised curiosity regarding the operational status of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), both based in Mumbai. As of now, no official notification has been issued by either exchange about a holiday on Mahaparinirvan Diwas. According to the stock market holiday calendar, both BSE and NSE are scheduled to remain operational on December 6, with regular trading activities continuing as planned.

Stock exchanges have occasionally observed holidays on local holidays in Mumbai. However, until an official announcement is made, regular trading activities will continue as usual on Mahaparinirvan Diwas. The next official stock market holiday in December is Christmas Day, on December 25, when trading will be suspended across all segments.

In Conclusion

While government and semi-government offices in Mumbai and suburban areas will observe a local holiday on December 6 for Mahaparinirvan Diwas, stock market operations will continue as usual unless stated otherwise. Investors and traders can carry out their financial activities while the city pays homage to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
