Sensex sheds 750 points, Oil stocks surge despite weak market. Overnight, headline Wall Street indices closed slightly higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.05%, S&P 500 gained 0.31% and the Nasdaq advanced 0.40%.

On the contrary, most of the Asian markets were trading in the red territory on the fear of recession in the US economy, high inflation and geo-political tensions. Australia’s ASX All Ordinaries fell over 1.5% tracking weak cues from global markets.

SGX Nifty indicated a gap down opening with a loss of 140 points. Indian equity benchmark indices opened with major cuts tracking weak global sentiments. The market strength was poor as 1,037 equities increased on the BSE, whereas 2,001 declined, and 136 shares remained unchanged. Around 137 stocks are locked in the upper circuit, whereas 163 were in their lower circuit.

At 11:30 am, the Indian benchmark indicator Sensex was trading at a level of 54,911.65, down by 1.37%. The only gainers of Sensex were NTPC Ltd and Power Grid Corporation of India. The Nifty 50 was trading at 16,363.45, down by 1.24%. The top-performing companies were Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Coal India and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd.

Despite the bloodbath on the domestic bourses, BSE Oil and Gas surged over 1.5%, led by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation with a gain of nearly 5%.
