Auto Sales in April 2022: Despite supply constraints, auto companies witness some recovery; Tata Motors shines

The commercial vehicles and tractor segment witness robust numbers.
Automobile sales volumes continued to remain under pressure due to supply side constraints in April 2022, however, overall sales numbers across all the segments display good signs of recovery. The tractor segment and the commercial vehicle (CV) segment were the winners. On a sequential basis, industry volumes have shown a degrowth compared to March 2022, but figures are improving as compared to April 2021. The sentiment however is improving with positive indicators the relaxing of COVID-19 restrictions, growing demand for electric vehicles and growth in commercial vehicles.
Passenger Vehicles:
Market leader, Maruti Suzuki reported domestic sales in April 2022 at 121,995 units, which were down 10.22% YoY over the same period in 2021. Maruti Suzuki said that the shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles that are primarily sold in the domestic market and that it took all possible measures to minimise the impact.
Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) reported domestic PV sales at 22,526 units in April 2022 as compared to 18,285 units in April 2021, up 23.19% YoY. The company is witnessing strong traction in demand across its products and strong order bookings as well. It is facing some supply chain constraints due to lockdown in China. The management has said that it is continuously monitoring the situation and taking appropriate actions.
Tata Motors, which had grabbed the second position in domestic PV sales from Hyundai, was third in April in terms of sales as it saw monthly sales of 41,587 units in the month of April 2022. The sales have not been as significant as previous month, but surely, the EV cars are witnessing strong order pipeline. As compared to April 2021, the homegrown carmaker’s domestic volumes increased by 65.72%.

Two-wheelers:
The country’s largest two-wheeler maker, Hero MotoCorp reported positive domestic volumes which came in at 398,490 units in April, an increase of 16.31% as compared to the same period last year. The company said that the economy gradually opening up and continued government policy support, April volumes indicate the continuously improving consumer sentiments. Meanwhile, its competitors - Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors saw decline of 26.34% and increase of 37.41%, respectively in domestic sales for the month.
Royal Enfield domestic sales stood at 53,852 units, up by 10.38% YoY as compared to 48,789 units in April 2021.

Commercial Vehicles (CV):
Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles registered growth across all segments and ended the month with an overall impressive three-digit growth of 108.86% in domestic CV sales while other players too witnessed strong double-digit YoY growth. Tata Motor’s passenger carriers in the CV segment witnessed the highest growth of 289%.
Mahindra & Mahindra, Bajaj Auto and Ashok Leyland dispatched 17,402 units (up 23.38% YoY), 8,944 units (up 13.20% YoY), and 11,197 units (up 40.65% YoY), respectively, in April 2022.

Tractors:
Tractor sales in April were a turnaround story with Escorts and M&M both reported higher sales numbers on a YoY basis. M&M reported domestic tractor sales which stood at 21,162 units in April 2021 compared to 33,562 units in April 2021, down by 36.9%.
In the domestic market, Escorts sold 7,676 units in the month of April 2022, up 20.20% as compared to 6,386 units sold in April 2021. In the press release company has mentioned that the ongoing harvesting in many states, better crop price realization as against the Minimum Support Price (MSP) due to current global geo-political environment, prediction of normal monsoon with likelihood of good rainfall in June and July leading to possible timely sowing this year, it expects next two months may witness strong retail sales.
