Stock Market Holiday on November 20 for the Maharashtra Elections 2024
Last Updated: 11th November 2024 - 04:42 pm
The stock markets have declared a holiday on November 20, 2024 due to the Maharashtra state assembly elections. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) announced the holiday in an official circular shortly before last week’s trading session concluded. This will be the third market holiday in November 2024.
In a notification released on Friday, November 8, the NSE stated, “The Exchange hereby notifies Wednesday, November 20, 2024, as a trading holiday on account of Assembly Elections in Maharashtra.”
The Maharashtra legislative assembly elections will be conducted across 288 constituencies on November 20, with vote counting scheduled for November 23. The state government has declared a public holiday on election day across all polling areas to facilitate voter participation. This announcement adds to a series of November stock market closures, with the next trading holiday set for Friday, November 15, in observance of Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Earlier this month, the markets were closed on November 1 for Diwali, but an hour-long Muhurat trading session was held in the evening to mark the start of the new financial year in traditional Hindu calendars. This upcoming holiday on November 20 will make it the third trading break in November.
Notably, this is not the first time this year that stock markets are observing a holiday for a major event. A trading holiday was previously observed on January 22 to mark the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, as well as on May 20 for the Lok Sabha elections. The remaining major closure for 2024 will occur on December 25 for Christmas. As always, regular trading hours will resume the day following each holiday, while stock exchanges remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
