India’s equity markets were slightly lower in their trading session on April 15 amid volatility in the trading environment, with the Nifty closing below the 24,200 level. The Sensex declined 122.56 points or 0.16% to close at 77,988.68, while the Nifty fell 34.55 points or 0.14% to end at 24,196.75.

The indices opened higher, tracking positive global cues linked to optimism around potential U.S.-Iran developments, but selling pressure in the second half of the session erased gains, pulling benchmarks to end near the flat line.

Sectoral Performance And Market Breadth

While the main indices were down, market breadth was positive, as seen by the advance-decline ratio, which stood at about 1.8:1. On a sectoral basis, IT, capital goods, and metal sectors moved up by 1%, whereas auto, banking, and oil & gas sectors declined. Broader markets performed better than benchmarks, as Nifty midcap and smallcap indices advanced by 0.6% and close to 1%, respectively.

Market Key Movers

On the Nifty list, the top losers were HDFC Bank, ONGC, HDFC Life Insurance, Titan Company, and Apollo Hospitals. On the gaining side, Hindalco Industries, Trent, Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, and Eternal recorded advances.

In stock-specific activity, Tejas Networks declined about 4% after reporting higher losses for the March quarter. HDB Financial Services rose around 6% following its quarterly earnings announcement. Suraj Estate Developers gained approximately 5% after acquiring a land parcel in Mumbai.

GTPL Hathway fell about 5% after reporting quarterly losses. Rubicon Research gained nearly 5% after acquiring an 85% stake in Arinna Lifesciences. John Cockerill India rallied more than 4% after bagging an order valued at ₹300 crore, whereas MosChip Technologies jumped by more than 4% following its acquisition of 73% shares of Vayavya Labs.

More than 160 stocks reached their respective 52-week high levels on BSE, which included the stocks of Hindalco Industries, Vedanta, Adani Power, Tata Power, NTPC, Siemens, and Aurobindo Pharma.

Closing Trend

It was a day of mixed trends for the market with early positivity followed by some profit booking activities towards the end of the day. Even though broad-based indices held their ground well and many stocks touched new high levels, both indices closed with losses.
