The Adani Group has announced its acquisition of Air Works, India’s largest private sector aviation Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services company, for an enterprise value of ₹400 crore. This landmark deal, executed through Adani Defence Systems & Technologies Ltd (ADSTL), marks a significant step in the conglomerate's expansion into the defence and civil aviation sectors.
Air Works, with a strong operational presence in 35 cities and a workforce of over 1,300 skilled professionals, has a proven track record in servicing both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. The company offers comprehensive aviation services, including line maintenance, heavy checks, avionics, interior refurbishments, painting, redelivery checks, and asset management. It operates major base maintenance facilities in Hosur, Mumbai, and Kochi, with regulatory approvals from over 20 international civil aviation authorities.
Strategic Benefits of the Acquisition
This acquisition bolsters Adani Group's capabilities in the defence MRO sector, positioning it as a key player in India's airborne defence ecosystem. Adani Defence & Aerospace CEO, Ashish Rajvanshi, highlighted the strategic significance of the deal, emphasizing its alignment with India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
“Our vision is to deliver a full-spectrum MRO offering that caters to both commercial and defence aviation sectors. By strengthening domestic capabilities, we are committed to building an integrated ecosystem that secures India’s skies and reinforces national sovereignty,” said Rajvanshi.
The acquisition also provides a platform for the Adani Group to venture into civil aviation services, a sector experiencing rapid growth in India. According to Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airports, the Indian aviation industry is at a transformative juncture, now the third-largest globally and poised to induct over 1,500 aircraft in the coming years.
“For us, creating a presence in the MRO sector is more than just a strategic step—it’s a commitment to enhancing the aviation infrastructure of our nation. This acquisition is a pivotal move towards shaping the future of India's skies,” Jeet Adani noted.
Air Works’ Role in Defence and Civil Aviation
Air Works has established itself as a leader in the civil aviation MRO sector while also building significant expertise in defence-related projects. The company has successfully executed MRO projects for key platforms of the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. Its dual capabilities in commercial and defence aviation make it a valuable addition to Adani Defence & Aerospace’s portfolio.
The MRO sector is critical to the aviation industry, particularly as India aims to become a global hub for aircraft maintenance and overhaul. By leveraging Air Works' expertise and Adani’s resources, the group aims to create a comprehensive MRO ecosystem spanning line, base, component, and engine maintenance services.
Conclusion
The acquisition of Air Works by the Adani Group represents a significant milestone in India’s aviation and defence sectors. It underscores the group’s commitment to strengthening the nation's MRO capabilities and creating an integrated aviation services ecosystem. With the Indian aviation industry on a growth trajectory, this strategic move aligns seamlessly with the government's vision of enhancing connectivity and self-reliance in critical sectors.
As Adani Defence & Aerospace takes charge of Air Works, the deal promises to pave the way for innovation, capacity building, and a robust infrastructure that will benefit both the civil and defence aviation industries, further cementing India’s position in the global aviation market.
