History

Eicher Tractor Corporation of India, founded in 1958, produced its first tractor in Faridabad in 1959. In 1980, it was renamed Eicher, and in 1982, it began producing light vehicles with technical assistance from Mitsubishi. Eicher went public in 1987, and Goodearth purchased 26% of Enfield India Ltd in 1990. Eicher vehemently contended for the 'company of the year for 90-91' for its contributions to the four-wheeler sector in 1992.

By then, it had continuously produced tractors, commercial vehicles, jeeps, and cars. It had purchased 60% of the stock interest in Enfield India Ltd. Eicher renamed Enfield India Ltd as Royal Enfield. In 1994, it ceased taking technical support from Mitsubishi. In 1996, Eicher Ltd was formed through a merger with Royal Enfield Motors. Eicher Motors now produces the Royal Enfield motorcycle and the VE-series heavy-duty trucks.
