Founded in 1945 by Muhammed Hasham Premji, WIPRO was formerly called Western Indian Palm Refined Oil Limited and manufactured vegetable and refined oils in Amalner, Maharashtra. In 1946, it came out with its Initial Public Offering.

The company shifted focus in 1966 when his son Azim Premji took over Wipro as the Chairman at 21. Sensing the opportunity in the Information Technology (IT) and computing industry, the company shifted towards this new sector at a nascent stage in India. In 1977, Wipro changed its name to Wipro Products Limited, and in 1982 to Wipro Limited. This year, it entered the IT products business and soon added multiple ventures focused on technology and manufacturing.

In 1988, the company diversified the product line into heavy-duty industrial cylinders and mobile hydraulic cylinders. A year later, in 1989, it set up a joint venture with General Electric in the USA, under the name Wipro GE Medical Systems Pvt Ltd, for the manufacture, sale and service of diagnostic and imaging products. The Joint Venture also has an OEM sourcing arrangement with Elpro International Ltd. for locally made x-ray products. In 1990, the joint venture became a subsidiary of the company.

In 2000, Wipro launched different personal computers and Information Technology segments while also being listed on the New York Stock Exchange (WIT). Today, the company has its primary focus on global information technology, consulting and business processes services while also operating in many IT and IT-enabled sectors.
