History and Milestones
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) traces its origins back to 1946 when it was founded in Bombay by Danish engineers Henning Holck-Larsen and Søren Kristian Toubro. Originally, it started as a representative for Danish dairy and allied equipment manufacturers. However, the onset of World War II disrupted trade, prompting the partners to start a workshop for jobs and services. They ventured into ship repair and fabrication during the war, which led to the formation of a new company, Hilda Ltd, for these operations.
Incorporated in 1946, Engineering Construction & Contracts (ECC) focused on construction projects and later became L&T's construction division. The company forged foreign collaborations and represented British manufacturers of various equipment. In 1947, L&T had an agreement with a US-based company called Caterpillar Tractor Company for marketing earth moving equipment. Larsen & Toubro Private Limited was incorporated to raise additional capital on 7 February 1946.
Post-independence, L&T expanded with Kolkata, Chennai, and New Delhi offices. It acquired 55 acres in Powai, Mumbai, for further development. In December 1950, L&T became a public company with significant capital and sales turnover growth. Subsequently, in 1956, the company's Mumbai office moved to ICI House in Ballard Estate, which was later purchased and renamed L&T House, serving as its present headquarters.
