NIFTY Midcap 50 is an index on NSE that tracks the top 50 mid sized companies selected from NIFTY Midcap 150. These companies are chosen based on their market size and the availability of derivative contracts and represent 17 different sectors. NIFTY Midcap 50 index gives weight to Financial Services, Capital Goods, Automobiles, IT and Power which together make up over 61% of the index.
Launched with a base value of 1000 on 1 January 2004 NIFTY Midcap 50 represents about 6% of the NSE's market value. It is managed by NSE Indices Limited and follows a three tier governance structure. There is also a Total Returns version of the index useful for creating investment funds and for benchmarking.

NIFTY Midcap 50 is an index on NSE that tracks 50 mid sized stocks selected from NIFTY Midcap 150 based on their market size and availability of derivative contracts. How is the Nifty Midcap 50 Index Value Calculated?
NIFTY Midcap 50 index value is calculated using this formula:
Index Value = Current Market Capitalisation / (Base Market Capitalisation * Base Index Value)
NIFTY Midcap 50 index undergoes a review twice a year with updates based on data from January and July. Any changes to the constituent stocks, up to a maximum of 5 per year are made effective on the last trading day of March and September. This process ensures that the index reflects the most current market conditions and company performance.
Nifty Midcap 50 Scrip Selection Criteria
NIFTY Midcap 50 share price is calculated by weighting its 50 stocks based on their free float market value compared to a base value updated in real time since 2010.
To be included in NIFTY Midcap 50, companies must:
● Be listed on NSE.
● Be part of NIFTY Midcap 150.
● Rank among the top 30 F&O (futures and options) stocks in the NIFTY Midcap 150 by market size.
● Have a market cap at least 1.5 times that of the smallest current NIFTY Midcap 150 stock.
● Be excluded if it falls below rank 70 among F&O stocks or if it is removed from NIFTY Midcap 150 or NSE’s F&O segment.
● For new listings eligibility is checked using three months of data instead of six.
● If there are not enough F&O stocks, it can include the top 30 non F&O stocks from NIFTY Midcap 150.
